KITTY CAT

Dance artist / Performer / Choreographer / Dance and fitness Instructor / Competition Judge / Dance & movement therapy facilitator

Cat Sweeney aka Kitty Cat, founder of Burncity Queenz (Melbourne’s first official Dancehall dance group), and Jungle City projects, has over 18 years experience in the industry as a dancer and arts practitioner. As a member of Burncity Queenz Cat has performed alongside big name artists in Dancehall and Afrobeats including: Elephant Man, Demarco, Cecil, Bracket, Stone Boy, and Konshens to name a few. Cat has travelled to Jamaica seven times over the past six years to learn Dancehall by the creators of the dances, and founded True Jamaican Dancehall Tours in 2014 – bringing Jamaican dancers to Australia, and taking Australian students to Jamaica to learn Dancehall from the source.

Cat was the First Australian in history to enter the International Dancehall Queen competition, and in 2015 ranked Top Ten in the 19th Annual IDHQ Competition. She has toured around Australia sharing her knowledge and love of Dancehall and helped grow the Dancehall community through her hard work and dedication to the culture.

In 2018, alongside her Burncity Queenz crew members Cat became one of the official back up dancers for Baker Boy and has featured in several of his videos including ‘Marryuna’ the award winning ‘Meditjin’. In 2019 Cat began her studies into Dance Movement therapy and in the coming years plans to unite her knowledge of dance and DMT to better support the community using dance as a tool for healing.

Chuby Dice

Dance artist / Performer / Choreographer / Dance creator /  Instructor / Jamaican Dancehall Culture Ambassador

Chuby Dice is one of the top dancers in Jamaica and leader of Jamaican dancehall crew Black Dice. He featured on the big screen in films including ‘Intent 2’ and ‘King of the Dancehall’ directed by Nick Cannon, and music videos for top artists including Vybz Kartel, Busta Rymes, Stylo G, Elephant Man, Shawn Storm and Australian producer Monkey Marc to name a few. His team Black Dice have gained much street cred and global recognition over the past few years for bringing the fire back to Jamaican Dancehall street parties with their pyrotechnic displays, and creation of popular party steps such as ‘Swing It’, ‘Move a Foot’, and ‘Tek Piece a It’.

In Australia, Chuby has performed at festivals including MONA FOMA, St Kilda Festival and Moomba, supported international touring artists such as Konshens, and judged the Australian Dancehall King and Queen competition. As a highly knowledgeable and sort after dance instructor he has delivered workshops in Melbourne, Perth, Canberra and of course back home in Jamaican with students traveling from all over the world to learn authentic Jamaican dance from the source.

Now based in Melbourne Chuby Dice is teaching and performing regularly as part of the Jungle City team, as well as in schools educating the next generation of Dancehall dancers in Australia.

SHAY SHAY

Dance artist / Performer / Choreographer

Shanti Monteiro has been dancing professionally for over 15 years and studying dance for almost 20 years. She has undergone intense training in the traditional West African style of drumming and dancing in Ghana and Guinea, where she trained with a professional African Ballet. She has performed and toured with a number of dance ensembles including Wassawumba (traditional African drum and dance group), Mr Savona dance crew (funk, reggae and dancehall) and the one and only @burncityqueenz (First Dancehall crew in Aus). She has performed extensively and in a variety of arenas including festivals, benefits, private functions, and specifically WOMAD and The Arts Centre. Her repertoire speciality is Dancehall and Afro dance styles.

SIMONE ETHEVE

Dance artist / Performer / Instructor

Simone was born in Australia with cultural background stemming from Thailand 🇹🇭 and Seychelles 🇸🇨 She is a proud member of @junglecityprojects mentor crew @culturequeenzau and @junglecitycollective. Her repertoire includes. Afro Dance, Dancehall, Hip Hop and choreography. Career highlights so far include being part of the @sportsgirl campaign featuring @culturequeenzau and @junglecitycollective

“I have a deep love for all dance forms In street, clubs/party. I started my dance journey with Traditional Thai Folk dancing and later started delving into other dance forms including Contemporary, Hip Hop grooves/party steps, breaking and choreography. My deep passion lies in Afro Dance and Dancehall. I consider myself a creative in all forms of arts, dance and writing. I have a strong love for dance, it’s rich history and deep cultural ties as well as the politics that come with it. I enjoy writing about dance politics the topics that are not discussed to often in the dance world. I have trained with Demi Sorono and Deon Nuku as an emerging dancer for Outer Urban Projects and even performed for them at Arts Centre Melbourne in their theatre/dance work “VESSEL”. I am also a proud dance member of Culture Queenz for Jungle City Projects”

Paula has been dancing and performing for over 20 years and has trained in styles such as urban, contemporary, hip hop, house, Afro and Dancehall. Paula has travelled to LA several times to train under some of the top choreographers in the urban scene, but ultimately found an authenticity in her Afro and Dancehall styles that redefined her passion for dance. Paula is passionate about stage performance and recently danced for Thndo in her stage show ‘Life in Colour.

Kwame Tosuma

Kwame Tosuma is an internationally recognized dancer and performer, and has worked between Australia and Ghana for over 20 years.

Lerato Masiyane

Lerato has been dancing for as long as she can remember – firstly in the style of Hip hop and then, since arriving in Australia, and joining Melbourne’s top Dancehall crew Burncity Queenz has become highly acclaimed for her skills in Dancehall and Afrodances. Lee placed 3rd in the Australian Dancehall Queen competition in 2015 and travelled to Jamaica in that same year to learn from the creators first hand in Jamaica.

Over the past few years Lee’s career has gone from strength to strength – not only with her position at Jungle City, and as a member of Burncity Queenz, but also as a solo performer, performing with the likes of Sampa the Great, Baker Boy and featuring in numerous music videos with local and international artists.

TINA DEMELO

Tina utilizes dance – the universal language to unite, connect and bring joy to others with her captivating, infectious and welcoming energy!!

She is committed to empowering others through dance which has seen her work in the community arts sector for 10 years.

Tina De Melo was crowned Australian DanceHall Queen (DHQ) in 2015, & placed top 10 in the International Dancehall Queen Competition in 2015 in Jamaica (the home of dancehall). She has performed at many festivals throughout Australia including supporting artists such as Sampa the Great, and features in music videos with artists such as Baker Boy, Thelma Plum, Emma Donovan, Hermitude to name a few. With many years of experience, she has supported International dancehall artists Beenie Man, Elephant Man, DeMarco, Charley Black, Cecile, Kranium, Konshens on their Internnational tours.

She has choreographed for high profile artists and companies including Bake Boy and J Smith Productions, specializing in Hip Hop, Afro Dances, Dancehall, West African Dance, and Traditional Timorese dance.

NETTY NINETIES

Dance artist / Performer / Choreographer / Instructor 

Netty studied a Bachelor of Performing Arts in the UK, with a special interest in dance. She has been studying dancehall for around 8 years both in Australia and Jamaica. She competed in the Australian Dancehall Queen competition in 2017 and 2018. She performed with a team of dancers from Jungle City in the World Reggae Dance Championships in Jamaica in 2017.
In recent years Annette has been focusing on choreography and teaching, and performed on stage at Monkey Marc’s Vital Sound tour in Melbourne in 2019.

Get to know KB in her own words:

“Hey my name is Karabo and I also go by KB. I’m a hip hop dancer (mainly do modern styles) and Afro dancer.
I’m a performer.
I’m of Zimbabwean background and mainly lived in New Zealand.
I started dancing professionally in high school but mainly dance for fun but now have joined the mentoring program with Culture Queenz. I’ve performed in community talent shows, been in music videos, and recently performed on stage for Daliwonga.
In the future I would love to perform on more stages or maybe be on tv”

Yasimin

Dance artist / Performer / Choreographer / Instructor 

Yasimin started her urban dance career with multiple dance companies such as Hollabak Dance Crew, Provokativ Dance Company, Raw & Rugged Dance Crew and Indigenous Hip Hop Projects.

Yasimin is also the creator of Intuition ent which has sourced talent and created choreography for Australian artists such as Bina Butta, Rydah and Kudzai. All opportunities have lead Yasimin to learn from national/international artists as well as travel internationally and throughout Australia.

Yasimin’s performance credentials include corporate and commercial opportunities such as Everybody Dance Now Channel 10 (Jason Derulo’s team), Showcase open for Chi Chi Devayne (RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 contestant), Sportsgirl.

Maya

Maya grew up in Iran and moved to Australia in 2013. Not long after arriving here Maya started her dancing journey in 2014 exploring styles such as House, Hip Hop, Street Jazz, Whacking and Dancehell. Maya is employed by L2R – a grass roots community dance organisation based in Melbourne’s western suburbs as a Dance teacher and regularly performs at events and workshops around Melbourne, as well as teaches kids classes for ages 6-12 and runs the Dance program at western language school at Braybrook. Maya has a deep passion for dance and looks forward to a long career in the industry.
